Hi, everyone, I'm Sukey Waldenberger and I teach humanities and anthropology at Yavapai College in Prescott, AZ. I'm also the General Education coordinator for the college. I started using 3D GameLab exactly one year ago, and have run four classes in it so far.

Not a lot of design experience, other than the self-taught kind. I'm using Wordpress for my class websites, so I'm learning that system. I did take a video game design class last year using Unity, which was a lot of fun but VERY time consuming.

Favorite apps:

--Learning: Glogster
--Communication: Facebook
--Game: Flower
--Productivity: Epic Win

I've got an iPhone 4 and a Kindle Fire, as well as access to an iPad 1 from the college. Also a netbook running Windows XP.

I'm a big proponent of using technology to take learning out of the classroom, so students can access it wherever they are, so that's why I'm following this quest chain.

I am Ryan Hiller, the Tech Coordinator and a teacher (Digipen, Photo, Video) at La Conner School District.

My experience prior to education was as a programmer/designer for mainframe, PC, and web. I have a degree in computer science.

Favorite Apps:

Learning - Tweetbot (Twitter client) - Twitter is currently my favored social media. You can quickly determine if a post has useful information and if so follow it via link or other means to the meat. Facebook, etc is just full of too much garbage.
Communication - Simple note - Shared note taking app. I can be at the grocery store getting items from the list and adding to the list, while my wife also is
Game - Carcassonne. Awesome board game and a great app to ply against multiple real opponents remotely on IOS.
Productivity - Evernote. Note taking synced between all my devices.

iOS : iPhone, iPad 1-3
Android : Kindle Fire

Introduce yourself: My legal name is Melissa Getz but I'm playing around here as Ntropi.

-Share with us any kind of design experience you have had so far:
- Dr. Hsu's EDTECH 506 class, which was amazing.
- I've tinkered a bit with Moodle.
- I am familiar with HTML and CSS to the extent that I learned it in the 502 class.
- I've played around with making websites and set them up so my students could access things online.
- As for non-digital design, I created a biotechnology class from scratch in 1998. It was an amazing experience. That lasted 5 years.
- I started a company in 2005 which required me to create a website and use software to create surveys. I don't know how much design experience that involved, though, because I used software other people wrote. I stopped the company in 2011.

-Share with us one/your favorite app in each of the following cateogry

--Learning: SpeakText- if I can get the text loaded into the app, it will read it to me
--Communication: Safari because I use it to access email online; I don't like the Gmail apps
--Game: Dr. Baek's Edutainment assignment got me hooked on WeRule for a few months. Fortunately I've overcome that addiction and now tinker with the free apps. I've become a fan of GeoSudoku.
--Productivity: todo.txt because it uses a dropbox interface. Maybe Dropbox and Evernote are more of my favorite productivity apps. So I can't follow directions by choosing just 1 app.

-Tell us how many mobile devices you have and/or have access to, and what kind of OS (Operating System) they are -running.
--iOS: iPod touch 2nd gen, iPad 2nd gen
--Android: none even though I did sit through a very short webinar on how to create Android apps about a year ago. I think I could make an Android app but since I don't own an Android device, I was not sure how I would actually test it out.
--Symbian: never heard of this
--Palm: in my past, not now
--Others: no clue what else is out there

-Tell us why you are playing this strand!
There is so much for me to learn and I have wanted to know how to make an app for the last few years. I've subscribed to a couple udemy courses and have done a few of the lectures, but it requires more discipline than I care to give it at the moment. If I can get a better clue here and follow up by completing some of the udemy courses, then I hope this is one goal I will actually be able to accomplish.

I am playing this strand because I thought that the idea of learning about creating my own apps was interesting. Depending upon the skills developed during this I felt it would be a good enrichment activity for students as well. There are times that I am looking for something relating to my class and there isn't anything out there. I am sure I not the only educator in this boat. Maybe I could create something useful for my students and for others as well.

Hi, I'm Betsy MacDonald and I'm a tech integrator/teacher at the Anglo American School in Sofia, Bulgaria for grades 6-10.

I have sporadic design experience, mostly around programming. Years back I taught Pascal in a programming class then had a hiatus in terms of teaching programming. More recently I've revisited my enjoyment of programming with learning RobotC for my robotics club, getting introduced to Java via Alice 3D environment and tinkering in a bit of novice game design.

I would say that my favorite or most used apps are:
--Learning - Flipboard for iPad
--Communication - Slices for Android
--Game - Words with Friends
--Productivity - Evernote

I have both a smart phone and a tablet:
-- iPad 1.0 running iOS 5.1.1 (my partner has the newest iPad, which I also use)
-- HTC Desire HD running Android 2.3.5

I am playing this strain because I hope to do some app development with my students this year and I need a lot more experience. I hope I can recover from my late start!

Hello! I am Kristina Thoennes. I am a teacher librarian working in a school for kids in grades 4-6.

Design experience: Hmm...I'm not sure what counts. I've designed web pages. I took classes in Basic and Pascal programming languages over 20 years ago. I "design" information literacy lessons for my students.

Favorite apps:
  • Learning: B&N Nook
  • Communication: Plume (Twitter app)
  • Game: Hmm...I haven't gotten into game apps. I'm interested in Minecraft Pocket Edition
  • Productivity: Evernote

Mobile device: I have an HTC Hero phone which is an Android. My daughter has an iPhone.

Why this strand? I am interested in programming generally. Most of the professional development I get through conferences seems to focus on how to use existing applications in education. There isn't much about what is going on behind the windows. I'd like to learn about that so I can make things myself when I can't find the app I want.

I felt intimidated just by the questions! I think we'll be okay, though. :)

I'm definitely interested in checking out some of the apps you all listed!

Hi, I am Connie Ritzman, I teach Psychiatric Nursing to nursing students in Chicago. I have been with Game Lab since the beginning and incorporate it into my classroom regularly. Most students enjoy using it as a learning tool.

I really do not have techy design experience. I am learning as I go and trying to fill in the gaps where I can.

I use the following apps:

Learning: TED
Communication: Skype, Facetime, Facebook, Twitter
Games: I am primarily a WOW person, however, I have a love/hate relationship with Angry Birds.
Productivity: Google, Google plus, in this session of gamelab I am learning and liking aspects of Hangout.

I am an Apple person with ipad and 4S iphone. In fact I am creating a quest in which Siri is admitted to the hospital in alcohol withdrawal and the students evaluate her for stage of withdrawal.

While I have zero app or game design experience, I have been part of the curriculum design and writing teams in district since 2004. I also have a small bit of graphic design experience (managed a graphic design office in grad school with artists that missed a lot of work and I got to take up the slack). I have designed a lot of websites, though most of them were in dreamweaver pre CSS.

At some point in the distant past I learned to program in basic and fortran (it was outdated as I was learning it), a nice Professor tried to beat Pascal into my head freshman year of college but arrays broke me and I retained zero knowledge. I use Moodle extensively though and am fairly comfortable cleaning up and writing simple HTML

I am really interested in developing some simple apps that will help integrate class assignments into mobile learning. Specifically I want the kids to be able to pull particular aspects from their moodle site (our guild site at school) into an app.

There are so many apps out there, but not the ones that will do what I want for the classroom. I would like to try my hand at making one and give my students input into the process and design.

Hi, Tracey,
Welcome to this strand! We'll be developing Android apps in this strand.
Do you have any Android device (smartphone or tablets)? It's okay if you don't, because you will be able to use Emulator to test your apps. Of course, it would be more fun if you own or have access to some Android device during this camp.

Hello,

I'm Val Broderick, a Ph.D. student in Arts & Technology at UT Dallas. I have lots of game design experience, but no app experience, and I'm working on learning how to do web page design, so I thought it might be fun to learn how to do a few basic apps, since linking tech is what everything does nowadays! I'm working on my JavaScript programming doing Code Academy in my spare time here and working on HTML and CSS as well.

Learning - Where's My Water - I love this. Cute, environmentally friendly, a game, and my 7 year old adores it!
Communication - NFL app, I'm a huge Vikings fan, so I love getting my football info every day!
Game - Deviltry Huntress, a matching game with a Goth theme
Productivity - Kindle, since I need to read constantly, and this allows me to read while waiting at the bus stop for my 7 year old, or between classes

Tell us how many mobile devices you have and/or have access to, and what kind of OS (Operating System) they are running.

I have a smart phone (Android), my laptop (Windows 7 with Chrome), and I don't really use a tablet, but I have access to my husband's Asus Transformer Prime 32G with Android system. I also have a Nook, but I can't really see doing any apps on that! :)

Tell us why you are playing this strand!
I would really like to get into doing a few basic apps, especially since I'm unable in my Ph.D. program to learn how to do apps, and yet I think so many students want to learn about creating them. As a professor I believe it's part of my job to at least understand the basics of many types of technology so at the very least I can guide my students towards avenues of learning, even when I am unfamiliar with all the in's and out's of those avenues.

Have a happy day,
ValtheRed
